VOLO, Ill., May 11 -- May 24-25-26, Volo Auto Museum is extending to guests a unique opportunity to sit behind the wheel of one of the fastest cars ever built. The 1986 Indy race car Michael Andretti qualified at 214.5 miles per hour.
The Acquisition
In April, 2002, Greg Grams, Owner and Director of Volo Auto Museum, attended the annual meeting of the National Association of Automobile Museums, held this year in Auburn, Indiana at the historic Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, Indiana.
Volo Auto Museum was in the company of such museums as Henry Ford, National Packard Museum, Chrysler Museum, Museum of Science & Industry, AACA Museum, Peterson Museum, Dean V. Kruse Foundation, Imperial Palace Museum and Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum.
A private auction was held for the directors of museums in attendance at the Saturday Night Dinner Conference. The Grand Auctioneer himself, Dean V. Kruse, auctioned two cars, a 1896 Benz replica went to high bidder, The Peterson Automotive Museum of Beverly Hills, California. And the 1986 Indy 500 race car driven by Michael Andretti went to high bidder, Greg Grams, director of the Volo Auto Museum of Volo, Illinois.
As Grams puts it, "We immediately set about building an Indy 500 Display to be completed for Memorial Day Weekend, May 24-25-26. And on that weekend only. Visitors to the Volo Auto Museum will be invited to actually sit in the driver's seat of the Indy car Michael Andretti raced in the 1986 Indy 500. Guests should remember to bring a camera!"
