ZETEC CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS USE CANADIAN REGIONAL RACE TO PREPARE FOR NEXT
RACES
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (May 10, 2002) —This coming weekend a number of Formula
Ford 2000 Zetec Championship will take part in the British Empire Motor Club
CASC Regional race at Mosport International Raceway.
Expected to contest the two-day even are AIM Autosport, Cape Motorsports,
PR1 Motorsports, Richard Morgan Racing and John Walko Racing. The teams and
drivers will use the Canadian Regional event to work on setups and become
more familiar with the 2.459-mile road course.
Since the Zetec Championship last competed at Mosport in 2000, the track has
undergone significant renovations. A new pitlane was constructed, with the
pit exit now after turn one, runoff area was increased throughout the track,
several turns had visibility increased and the track was repaved and widened
to 40 feet.
Given the changes to the track and the introduction of the 2.0-liter Zetec
engine, the current qualifying lap record of 1:21.094 (110.30 MPH) set by
Ian Lacy and race lap record of 1:21.682 (108.377 MPH) set by James Hanson
are expected to be broken. Thus far in testing and at the season-opening
doubleheader, Zetec Championship cars have been three to five seconds
quicker than previous lap records at various tracks. Officially any new lap
record will not be set until the Victoria Day Trans-Am Weekend, May 17-19,
2000. During the Victoria Day race weekend, featuring SCCA Trans-Am cars
producing in excess of 650 horsepower, the 160 horsepower Zetec Championship
cars are expected to be the fastest car competing.
“I'm really looking forward to racing at Mosport,” said series veteran and
Canadian driver JW Urlin. “I'm real comfortable driving here on my home
track, so it's a good track to work on stuff with the car. We're going to
use the Regional race weekend to further develop the car and prepare for the
Victoria Day race weekend."
Rounds Three and Four of the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship
commences Wednesday, May 15, 2002, with optional testing for the Victoria
Day Trans-Am Weekend at Mosport International Raceway.
