SATURDAY, MAY 11 LINE-UP FOR IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY
AUTO CLUB LATE MODELS, ULTRA WHEELS SUPER TRUCKS,
GRAND AMERICAN MODIFIEDS, & MODIFIED 4's: SAT. MAY 11
Portion of the night's proceeds at Irwindale Speedway will go to fight Cancer
Irwindale, Calif. - - As everyone knows, Saturday May 11, is the day before Mother's Day, and again this year it becomes a day on which racing fans can do their part in the fight against breast cancer by doing what comes naturally … Attending a NASCAR event at Irwindale Speedway.
In honor of Mother's Day, May 12, a part of the proceeds from the Saturday night NASCAR races at Irwindale Speedway will be donated to the Cecilia Gonzalez De La Hoya Cancer Center at White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles.
All Irwindale racing fans have been sent flyers and e-mails letting them know that when they bring a copy of the flyer or a printed-out page from their e-mail and purchase a full price adult ticket ($15.00); the Speedway will, in turn, donate $5.00 to the hospital in support of its fight against breast cancer.
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Presented by Dodge is really starting to heat up about a quarter of the way into the 2002 season … For a confirmation of that assertion one needs to look no further than the next couple of paragraphs:
Riverside's Tod Burns leads the Automobile Club of Southern California Late Models into action on Saturday night with a six point lead (after 4 races) over Agoura Hills' Tim Huddleston (196-190). Ford-mounted Kevin Wood of Saugus is third in points at 170, with 2001 division champ Dave Hessing (Canyon Country), and 1999 Super Stock champ Mike Price (San Pedro) at fourth and fifth in the 2002 points chase at 168 and 136 respectively.
Also on the show card for Saturday night's races are the Modified 4's, the Grand American Modifieds, and the Ultra Wheels Super Trucks.
It wasn't exactly a Danny Sullivan-type “Spin and Win” move that Terry Limberopoulous made in the Mod 4's but it was spectacular nonetheless … After a wild sportscar-like flip over on the front straight, Limberopoulous simply shrugged it off, fired the engine back off and took off. Not for the pits, heck no, the Bellflower resident, who was leading the points chase coming in motored on and ended up an astonishing eighth place. In the process he lost his points lead to Ojai's Greg Tucker but only by six points … And he'll be back, with four straight wheels this Saturday.
Saugus's Roger Carufel, Jr. leads the Grand Ams, and Kevin O'Neil from Long Beach is at the top of the Ultra Wheels list, coming into Saturday's adventures.
An on-track autograph session will be scheduled for 6:00PM, giving fans an opportunity to go down right on the race track and see the cars and drivers in their native habitat.
Fans (over 18 years of age) who arrive prior to 7:00PM are also invited to drop their name into a free drawing for a “Super Ride” in one the Performance Race Training Center's special 2-seat stock cars right after the trophy dash. Whopping and hollering are allowed, even suggested for the lucky winner who will be taken on the ride of their life around the fast banked oval.
That, and the pre-race “Know your NASCAR” question-and-prizes and autograph session, the face-painting clown for the young'uns, the live band from 4:00 to 6PM, and the open pits after the race, all add up to a more racing for your money night that's bound to be every race-fan's delight.
