GM'S Vortec HP3 8100 Concept V8 Powers Winning Entries In APBA Offshore Race Series Season Opener
Vortec Power Team Captures First And Second Place
PONTIAC, Mich. - At the season opener for the 2002 APBA Offshore Race Series April 25-28 in Daytona Beach, Fla., the Vortec Power Team captured first and second place in high-speed boats powered by the Vortec HP3 8100 concept V8 engine.
During the race weekend, a total of 66 boats took on the five-mile course. Five of the seven teams that comprise the Vortec Power Team competed in their respective race divisions, with two securing wins and one resulting in a top showing.
Team High Noon, racing a Vortec-powered Activator powerboat, captured first-place in the eight-lap Super Vee Light Single class. The team posted a time of 35:19 with an average speed of 67.92 mph and earned 102 points. Team Extreme, racing a Vortec-powered Extreme powerboat, placed a close second with a total time of 35:20. The team also averaged a speed of 67.92 mph and earned 92 points. In the Super Vee Light Twin class, team Pier 57 captured a first-place win behind the wheel of a Vortec-powered Scater powerboat. The total time posted for the team was 31:02 with an average speed of 77.32 mph, resulting in 103 points.
The second race in the 2002 APBA Offshore Race Series, which consists of 10 offshore races at various venues, is May 17-19 in Marathon, Fla. Competitors in 10 race classes will continue to vie for points leading to the National Competition October 18-20 in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the World Championship November 18-27 in Key West, Fla.
