Pontiac 400 postponed until Sunday
TEAM MONTE CARLO NOTES AND QUOTES
PONTIAC EXCITEMENT 400
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
2002 NASCAR WINSTON CUP SERIES
SATURDAY, MAY 4, 2002
The Pontiac Excitement 400 was postponed because of rain at 10:36 p.m.,
exactly an hour after it was red-flagged at 9:36 p.m. It has been
re-scheduled for 12 noon tomorrow (Sunday) and will begin airing at 11:30
a.m. on FX. The race was to have taken the green flag originally at 7:11
p.m.
DURING RAIN DELAY AFTER 66 LAPS:
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE¹S CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO: "It was a little
slippery at first; the track was really tight. And it seems to be freeing
up a little but more and more as the race goes on, but now we¹re going to
start all over again. It¹s raining on the track again and we¹ll have to
start all over." DID IT START AT THE RIGHT TIME? "I think the track was in
good condition to get back going, even with the sprinkles that were coming
down it wasn¹t affecting the cars. We were keeping the track dry enough as
a group out there going, and I didn¹t have any problems going with the green
when we did." ARE YOU FRUSTRATED? "Can¹t race in the rain. We were
working ourselves to the top 15; I think we can hopefully get a top 10 out
of it today."
MIKE SKINNER, NO. 4 KODAK CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO: "The conditions were good.
The race track was pretty good. Obviously the rain kind of made it slicker,
it¹s one of those deals that NASCAR¹s got to make the call. They made the
right call; the race track was getting too slick to race on. ON THE START:
"I think they could have started earlier, even. It just kept on raining, it
got better and it would rain, get better. That¹s a tough call to make;
NASCAR does a good job at that." ARE YOU FRUSTRATED? "Yeah, I¹m
frustrated, I¹m pretty frustrated. You know, our Kodak Films Monte Carlo
was a little better than that in Happy Hour. The track conditions have
changed a lot; we¹ve got to make some good decisions here and make that
thing a little bit better. Some of the guys really cut you off out here, so
we¹ve just got to try to get some track position here."
JERRY NADEAU, NO 25 UAW-DELPHI MONTE CARLO: "The track¹s really good. It¹s
got tons of grip. Really, the track is not nearly as fun as it used to be
-- when you can run two-three wide. Now you just got to run the bottom. I
think they really screwed up on the sealer. I think the condition of the
weather was not the problem. The track was fine from the getgo. Everybody
was fighting pretty hard at the beginning trying to stay at the bottom and
guys were getting pushed out of the way. Me and Steve (Park) just got a
little bit together coming off of turn 2, but nothing big. It was just a
little bit of bumping. That¹s what you get when you come to a short track
like this." DOES THIS MESS UP YOUR CONCENTRATION? "No, not really. Once
you get back there it¹s fine. I just think it¹s going to be a long night.
I think it¹s going to rain, stop, rain. Who knows? I don¹t know what
NASCAR¹s plan is, just to get the 200 laps in and go home or do this
tomorrow."
