Toyota Records Best-Ever April Sales for the Sixth Consecutive Year

TORRANCE, Calif., May 1 -- Following the best-ever first quarter sales in its history, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported best-ever April sales of 147,334 vehicles, an increase of 0.3 percent over last year's record-setting month, and the company's sixth consecutive best-ever April.

"Consumers continue to tread lightly as economic growth rolls along at a steady but slow pace," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO.

Both TMS sales divisions recorded best-ever April sales. The Toyota Division reported record-breaking sales of 127,317, an increase of 5,063 units over last year. The Lexus Division enjoyed its best-ever April with sales of 20,017 vehicles, an increase of 2.2 percent.

Toyota Division passenger car sales paced the record-setting month with 70,567 units sold, an increase of 0.3 percent. The mid-size Camry enjoyed strong sales with 35,789 units sold, up 0.8 percent. The all-new Corolla recorded sales of 22,306, an increase of 12.5 percent. The continued popularity of the Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan produced best-ever April sales of 1,834, up 101.9 percent.

Toyota Division light truck sales were led by the Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) with best-ever April sales of 9,310, an increase of 30.5 percent. The Sequoia full-size SUV also recorded a best-ever April with 5,789 units sold, up 2.6 percent. The Tundra full-size pickup posted best-ever April sales of 8,505, up 10.4 percent.

The Lexus Division's record-setting month was paced by best-ever April passenger car sales of 12,830 units, up 1.3 percent. The sales charge was led by the all-new ES 300 luxury sedan with sales of 6,035, up 75.6 percent. On the light truck side, the RX 300 SUV posted strong sales of 6,495, an increase of 5.2 percent.

Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 62.3 percent of total April sales.

There were 25 selling days compared to 24 last April. The additional selling day resulted in Toyota Division total sales holding steady at 0.0 percent and a slight percentage decrease in Toyota Division light trucks even though actual sales numbers increased in both categories.
