MAY 4 SUPER-SHOW AT IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY: JANI-KING SUPER LATE MODELS BACK FOR MORE Fun Cinco De Mayo Celebration Scheduled For Saturday! Irwindale, Calif. - - As if last week's 75-lap Jani-King Super Late Model race wasn't exciting enough, the high-powered top-of-the line NASCAR series racers will be back for more on the Irwindale half-mile only one short week later. “We had a great car on Saturday night,” said winner Tony Green, whose family team has really come to the fore this year. “Hopefully we'll get the combination just right for this Saturday night as well. This is very tough competition,” he added. “We can't afford to think that we've got anyone in the top 20 beat for a second or they'll motor on by.” Oak Hills' Tony Green has the lead (196 points) coming into the Saturday night Super Late show, a towering forty-four points over second place Brent Reynolds of Escondido. Reynolds' steady climb up the points chart has seen him score points in all four of the series races so far, his best being second place on opening night. Not scoring any points in the opening round, but then coming on strong with a third, a win, and a second in the last three races have put Northridge's Ben Walker into third place in the chase with 144 points. Forty-four points are a bunch in this tight competition, but a single DNF (did not finish) can set anyone back up to fifty of them in this show. Consistent good finishes are the key to wearing the champion's jacket and pocketing that check at the 2002 banquet. In the Vista Paint Super Stocks, the redoubtable Darren Cheek, from Phelan, has four victories in four races. His perfect 200 points are out there for all to see (and shoot at). The smiling second-generation racing driver of the #62 car never seems to set a wheel wrong on his merry way to Victory Square. Can anyone best him? Stay tuned because there's a points log jam right behind him and everyone of those drivers (and thirty more in this division) loose sleep thinking about how they would give anything to be the first (other) driver to take home a Vista Paint first place trophy this year. It can be done, but Darren's not going to make it easy, you can bet on that. Val Cummings, in the three American Race Trucks events run this season at Irwindale has yet to win a race, and Michael May has won two. So where do you think these two are in the Irwindale points? West Covina's Cummings leads and Huntington Beach's May is in fifth, behind Dale Cromwell, Neil Conrad, and David Lyon. May only got two points in race two and Cummings has a second, fifth, fifth for a 132 to 102 lead over May. They're back for more pick-em-up proceedings this Saturday night. Here's some fun, we've got two drivers tied for first place in the Legends Cars after two races. With identical 92's Ricky Wildman (Yorba Linda) and Bill Everett (Fontana), both (very) “young guns” are eight points up on Victorville's Ralph Alexander. The action should be good when the these 5/8-scale fiberglass full-fendered versions of the famed NASCAR modifieds driven by legendary drivers such as Fireball Roberts, Buck Baker, Curtis Turner, Speedy Thompson and Banjo Matthews take to the Irwindale 1/3-mile oval this weekend. An added attraction will be the NASCAR Modified 4's with Bellflower's Terry Limberolpolus leading the pack after winning the first two races of the season. In this division we have a three-way have a tie for second place with Steve Rogers of Glen Avon, Greg Tucker of Ojai, and 2001 Champion Guy Tripp all locked together at 92 points each ... the third-mile should be “interesting”. All of the above racing, and the pre-race “Know your NASCAR” question-and-prizes and Autograph Session, the face-painting clown for the young'uns, the live band from 4 to 6PM, and the open pits after the race, all add up to a more racing for your money night that's bound to be every race-fan's delight. And this weekend Irwindale will celebrate Cinco de Mayo a day early with strolling mariaches, piñatas for the kids, plus a few other surprises.
