WOODSIDE SECOND IN SOUTHWEST SERIES POINTS
FOLLOWING STOCKTON 99 RACE
April 29, 2002 (Saugus, Calif.) - Sean Woodside has overtaken second place
in the Featherlite Southwest Series, NASCAR Touring points as of Saturday's
Stockton 125 at Stockton (Calif.) 99 Speedway, strengthening his position as
a serious contender in this year's championship chase.
He was third in the points going into Saturday's race.
The Stockton 125 was fourth in a schedule of fourteen events for the 2002
Southwest Series season. The series is renowned as one of NASCAR's most
competitive touring divisions.
"We were very happy to push up in the points," Woodside commented. "It's
still early in the season, and you can never predict how the race will play
out when we're at a quarter-mile track like Stockton. Short-track racing is
always fun, but it's very easy to end up on the bottom of the heap. Everyone
is trying to grab the same small piece of real estate."
He continued, "Many thanks to Dan Holtz, Kevin Thompson, the Walkers, my
crew and everyone else who helped me get to the Stockton race. I really
appreciate how everyone pulled together to make it happen."
Woodside started the race from a fifth-row position on the grid. He had
advanced to fifth-place as the race neared the half-way mark, when the
third- and fourth-place cars in front of him spun out, forcing him to stop
momentarily on the track in order to avoid getting caught up in the wreck.
He held a top-ten position throughout the remainder of the race, finishing
in ninth-place.
The next stop on the Southwest Series schedule is the May 19th Southwest
Series 100 at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo.
"We are really hoping to get to the Pikes Peak event," said Woodside.
"That's one of the high-profile races on the Southwest Series schedule."
Woodside is working hard to assemble the resources to continue his quest for
a second NASCAR Touring series championship, following the end of his
association with Team Walker Motorsports, which recently announced it was
closing its business.
