#41 Target California race report

TEAM TARGET FINISHES 27TH IN CALIFORNIA
Spencer drops to 21st position in Winston Cup championship points

FONTANA, Calif. (April 28, 2002) - The Target Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Jimmy Spencer finished in 27th place in the NAPA Auto Parts 500 at California Speedway. Spencer dropped one spot to 21st position in NASCAR Winston Cup championship points.

The Target Dodge started the 500-mile event in 22nd position but dropped back to 30th place on lap 2. Spencer slowly moved up to 25th place on lap 9 but he quickly radioed in that the car was real loose and he couldn't drive it down in the corner.

During the first caution of the day on lap 16, Spencer brought the Target Dodge in for a four-tire pit stop with adjustments. Spencer moved up to 17th position on lap 48 but radioed in stating that he was losing front grip on the tires. The Target Dodge had to come in early for a green-flag pit stop because the car was getting worse every lap. Spencer went down one lap in the process and went back out in 20th position. Team Target worked on the car during the remainder of the day but was unable to dial it in. Spencer finished the race two laps down in 27th place.

"We had a pretty disappointing day with the Target Dodge today," Spencer said. "The car was real loose, and we couldn't get any grip in the corners. It got so bad that we had to come in early and adjust on the shocks. We lost a lap in the process and it really didn't help too much."

Next on the schedule for the No. 41 Target team is the Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond International Raceway on May 4, 2002.
