IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY VOICE TABBED BY CART TO BE THE VOICE OF CHAMP CAR RACING

IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY “VOICE” TABBED BY CART
TO BE THE VOICE OF CHAMP CAR RACING

Irwindale, Calif. - - Bruce Flanders, for four years now the voice of Irwindale Speedway, has been announced as the first-ever Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) official traveling track announcer. “But I'm only out of town for 10 Irwindale races out of thirty-four,” said the peripatetic pro-nouncer of plu-perfect pronouns.

The veteran announcer, who just a few weeks ago celebrated his silver anniversary of announcing at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, will go on the road for CART beginning on the weekend of June 2 for the race at Milwaukee and will be THE man on the mike for an even dozen twelve CART races including the Rockingham 500 in Merry Olde England on September 14. “We'll see how the Brits stand up to my style,” said the concise and colorful contributor of colloquy.

He'll only do one Canadian race for CART - - Vancouver - - because the organizers at Montreal are said to have hired “the Jay Leno” of Canada (please make up your own joke here) for the job, and besides, Flanders' French is a bit rusty anyway. “I'll be here at Irwindale for that date (August 24), I really never liked eating snails anyway,” said the mustachioed miesterspeaker of the moments that matter.

Bruce's announcing job at the June 9 Grand Prix of Monterey will be the golden-toned orator's return to a track that he spent many a moon at announcing both motorcycles and other types of racing. His stint as the announcer of the bikes ran from 1973 through 1996, twenty-three years, almost equaling his quarter-century with the LBGP.

All said Bruce Flanders is the track announcer's track announcer and the fan's favorite. They know his work and they love his naturally nuanced work on the mike. His work at Ascot, Hangtown, Perris Auto Speedway, the FIM Speedway World Finals at the LA Coliseum in 1981, the Grand Prix of Miami, the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Championship Gran Prix, and half a hundred other venues and his charity work on behalf of the 1199 Foundation has made him something of a hero in many people's eyes. Of course Bruce would not be interested in hearing that last statement, he's living the life he always dreamed about, having fun with the fans, keeping them in-tertained and en-formed ... and much, much more.

Flanders on the mike = mirth in the house and information in the fan's ears.
