Ohio Casualty Group Announces New Government Relations Officer

    FAIRFIELD, Ohio--April 24, 2002--The Ohio Casualty Insurance Company, flagship company of Ohio Casualty Group, is pleased to announce that Alan B. Smith has joined the company as assistant vice president of Government Relations. Smith will establish a formal government relations program for the company.
    "We are fortunate to have such an experienced individual joining us to strengthen our government relations efforts," remarked President and CEO Dan Carmichael, CPCU. "We are confident that he will provide solid leadership in this arena, which is an important aspect for our company."
    Smith, a resident of Bexley, Ohio, most recently served as associate vice president of Government Relations for Nationwide Insurance, Columbus, Ohio. Prior to that time, he was director of Government Affairs for the Soap and Detergent Association, New York City, N.Y. From 1978-1984 he was an area legislative affairs representative for Nationwide Insurance in Harrisburg, Pa. Other former positions include minority counsel, Ohio House of Representatives; attorney-inspector, Ohio Division of Securities; and special agent, Federal Bureau of Investigation.
    A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, Smith received his juris doctor degree from The Ohio State University College of Law. He serves as a national director of the American Legislative Exchange Council and the Insurance Institute of Kentucky. He also was the Private Sector Chair of the former American Legislative Exchange Council Insurance Task Force.
