NEC Delivers Large-Scale Servers For Next i-Mode System

NEW YORK, NY--(INTERNET WIRE)--Apr 23, 2002 -- NEC Corporation (NEC)announced today its delivery of approximately 140 large scale UNIX (note 1) based servers to NTT DoCoMo Corporation (NTT DoCoMo) for both development and testing, including debugging, of the existing and next generation i-mode system (Note 2), along with NTT Data Corporation (NTT Data).

The new i-mode system is scheduled to launch in the spring of 2003 and NEC's NX7000 Series, which operates under HP-UX operating system, have been selected for the system.

NTT DoCoMo has been promoting its total reconstruction plan for the next generation i-mode system in order to meet increasing usage by existing and future i-mode and FOMA service subscribers. The new system will be a backbone system to support more than 40 million subscribers and also is developed as social infrastructure scalable to manage more subscribers. In addition to the servers, which NEC has delivered at this time, several hundred servers in total are expected to be installed, which will make it an unprecedented large-scale open mission critical system in the world.

Through various strategic partnerships with number of companies including Hewlett-Packard Company and various experiences in constructing open mission critical systems, NEC will do its best to construct an open mission critical system that is robust enough to be social infrastructure.
