Latest Point Standings Reveal New Leaders

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 23, 2002) -- The Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series released its latest point standings following last weekend's UnitedAuto Touring 250 and UnitedAuto Sport 250 at Phoenix International Raceway. The series' first twin 250s brought about lots of movement in the standings, including new team and driver leaders in two of the four classes.

Powell Motorsports and its drivers Doug Goad, of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Devon Powell, of Port Perry, Ontario, continue to lead the Grand Sport I class standings, followed by Doncaster Racing and drivers Scott Maxwell and David Empringham, both of Toronto. UnitedAuto Sport 250 winner Planet Earth Motorsports made the biggest jump in the GS I standings, moving up four places to fourth place in the team points, while drivers Joe Nonnamaker and Shane Lewis advanced six places to sixth place in the driver standings.

Max Q Motorsports passed Shreiner Racing and SpeedSource to claim the lead in the Grand Sport II team standings. After capturing its first win of the season in Phoenix, the team holds a three-point advantage over previous-leader Shreiner Racing. Max Q drivers Emil Assentato and Nick Longhi also took over the lead in the GS II driver standing after previously holding fifth place. Shreiner Racing's Jeff Lapcevich and John Shreiner slipped to third place, four points back, while SpeedSource's Sylvain Tremblay and John Strum are six points behind the leaders in fifth place.

Sport Touring I also received new team and driver leaders following the UnitedAuto Touring 250. The second-place finish by Villaconn International's #36 car moved it to the front of the team standings, knocking the #2 Team Lexus entry to second place. Villaconn's #34 car took a leap in the team point standings after earning its first win of the season in Phoenix. The #34 entry jumped up four places to tie for second place with #2 Lexus team. Lexus' #3 and #0 cars round out the top-five ST I team standings.

Villaconn's drivers control the top-four spots in the driver points. Bransen Patch and Don Salama, drivers of the #34 car, moved into the lead, while winning-car drivers Beau Buisson and Ken Dobson took a giant leap from 10th-place to third.

Bill Fenton Motorsports and its drivers Bill Fenton and Bob Beede saw a substantial cut in their Sport Touring II leads. DTM Engineering's win in Phoenix moved it to within one point of the leader after previously trailing by 12. Although the DTM victory bumped the HRPworld.com team to third place in the standings, the team gained four points on the leading Fenton team.

The ST II driver standings saw no change in the placement of the top drivers but did see the points tighten significantly. HRPworld.com's Wayne and Will Nonnamaker shaved five points off Fenton and Beede's lead and are now within one point of the leaders. DTM's Charles Espenlaub and Scooter Gable also maintained their fifth and sixth positions, respectively, while each gaining 12 points on the leaders.

The many changes in the points extended into the manufacturer standings, where Corvette became the sole leader in the GS I class after previously sharing the top spot with Porsche. The American manufacturer now holds a five-point lead. Ford doubled its lead over BMW in the GS II points from five points to 10. However, BMW moved to the front of the ST I class, knocking Lexus to second place with a four-point deficit. Acura maintained its lead in the ST II standings, but second-place Mazda cut it from 12 points to seven.

The UnitedAuto Touring 250 and UnitedAuto Sport 250 will both be broadcast on SPEED Channel on Saturday, May 4 beginning at 3 p.m. ET. Grand-Am Cup will next race in the Sports Car Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International, June 21-23.
