Autoliv Chooses Wavecom To Equip Volvo On Call Telematic System; Wavecom confirms its leadership in the automotive market
ISSY-LES-MOULINEAUX, France--April 22, 2002--Wavecom SA , a leading developer of digital wireless standard modules (WISMO(R)), today announced that the company has been selected by Autoliv AB, a world-wide leader in automotive safety, to supply GSM modules for the Volvo On Call telematic system. The agreement calls for Wavecom to deliver more than 240 000 WISMO Quik modules. These will be integrated into the Volvo On Call telematic system, initially for Volvo's future 4x4 vehicles and subsequently in the carmaker's other models.
Volvo is already recognized as offering industry-leading safety and security in its vehicles, and the Volvo On Call system is the latest generation of the company's car safety measures. The system is designed to provide both automated and user-activated alerts to the Volvo On Call Alarm Centre, as well as facilitating remote diagnosis and resolution of issues. The idea is to enhance driver and passenger safety in the event of, for example, a car breakdown, theft, or a driver assault, as well as offering a link into information services such as traffic news. However, more mundane problems can also be resolved - the system can even remotely unlock car doors if the driver has lost the keys.
A crash-robust telematic system, Volvo On Call is activated by either deployment of in-vehicle air bags or other in-car sensors, or from an emergency SOS and road assistance button provided to the driver. In either case, Volvo On Call sends a text message to a Volvo On Call Alarm Centre via the integrated WISMO wireless module. On receipt of the text alert, a voice line is opened for communication between the car and the alarm centre operator; the wireless connection also enables the remote activation of other functions.
Commenting on the news, Autoliv's President Jan Carlson said, "Wireless connectivity is a key feature of our telematics systems. The WISMO modules fully meet our requirements in terms of performance, safety and quality, and of course is a safety-enhancing solution, providing communication functionality between our in-vehicle products and our emergency and service centres."
Aram Hekimian, Wavecom's CEO commented, "We're delighted that Autoliv has chosen WISMO to power the wireless connectivity of its next generation telematics systems. The automotive sector is renowned for its exacting standards, and we are pleased that Autoliv, a world leader in automotive safety, has recognized Wavecom as providing the best fit products for its needs."
WISMO technology is already in service within Dynafleet, the fleet management system developed by Autoliv for Volvo Trucks, which has been using WISMOs for more than two years. Volvo On Call is currently available in Sweden, with plans to extend the service to other European countries in the near future.
