Honda Sweeps Supercross 125 Podium!
AMA / EA Sports Supercross Series Round 14: Texas Stadium, Dallas, TX
Saturday, April 20, 2002
2001 EA Sports Supercross Champion and current points leader Ricky
Carmichael held off David Vuillemin and Jeremy McGrath to win his ninth
250cc Supercross main event of the year.
Carmichael put his "Scorpion King" clad CR250R in first place early on
in the 20-lap main and crossed the checkered flag with fists in the air,
in front of 43,789 roaring fans. ABC television covered the race for a
Sunday, April 21, airing.
"I might not have been the fastest guy out there tonight, but I was for
20 laps," said Ricky Carmichael. "I think I just wore those guys out
tonight."
Honda Racing's Nathan Ramsey rode a solid race finishing just behind the
front runners to take home fourth place for the night. Ramsey won Round
13 in Pontiac, MI where he put his CRF450R on top of the podium for the
first time in EA Sports Supercross history.
Red Rider Sebastien Tortelli rode great all night. Tortelli battled with
Stephane Roncada for a few laps and eventually crossed the finish line
in sixth place.
Honda Racing's Ernesto Fonseca had a tough night at Texas Stadium. The
"Fonz" crashed hard in the first turn, of the 250cc main event and would
end up finishing in nineteenth place for the night. Fonseca at one
point, pulled off to the side to speak with technician Kenny Germain
before pulling back onto the racetrack.
Ernesto Fonseca grew up in Costa Rica, and is one of the top Hispanic
motorsports athletes in America. Fonseca was welcomed in a large way by
the Hispanic race fans that showed up at Texas Stadium to root him on.
Amsoil / Dr. Marten / Journeys / Honda Racing's Mike LaRocco is still
recovering from a broken right wrist he sustained in Minneapolis.
LaRocco is undergoing a strong rehabilitation program to get his wrist
back to 100%.
Amsoil / Dr. Marten / Journeys / Honda Racing's Travis Preston put his
head down and took back the points lead and another 125 West Coast win
in Texas. Preston, who now leads James Stewart by ten points, will be
focusing on winning the title next week in Salt Lake City. Teammate
Chris Gosselaar rode a consistent 125cc race, and followed Preston
across the checkers to claim second place.
Shark / Plano Honda's Travis Elliott put his CR125R on the podium for
the first time in 2002. Elliott rode a smart and calculated race to take
third overall, and helped give Honda it's first 125cc sweep of the
season.
