PRESS RELEASE: RSAC Scottish Rally revs up for
June
RSAC Scottish Rally revs up for its traditional
June date in Dumfries
Scotland¹s biggest annual motorsport event the RSAC Scottish Rally returns
to its traditional June date this year, after shifting to September in 2001
because of the foot and mouth epidemic.
For the sixth successive year, the rally will be based in Dumfries and this
year will take place on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9. The route will
cover two days of rallying in the classic forest stages around Dumfries and
Galloway on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9.
Supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council, the rally provides a
considerable boost for the local economy with estimates that it generates at
least £1 million of additional business in the area. Organised by the Royal
Scottish Automobile Club (Motor Sport) Ltd, it will attract an international
field of competitors, plus thousands of officials and spectators.
The RSAC Scottish Rally is a counter in both the Pirelli British Rally
Championship and the New Pig Scottish Rally Championship. Along with the
other British championship rounds it is assured of high-profile television
coverage, including a half-hour Channel 4 programme featuring the event.
This year¹s RSAC Scottish Rally will start and finish right in the centre of
Dumfries, with the first of the international field leaving the High Street
at 8 am on Saturday (June 8).
The first day will take the crews on a 200 mile route west from Dumfries to
Castle Douglas and Newton Stewart, before returning to Dumfries around 5.45
pm. On this leg of the rally there will be some 63 miles of competitive
sections, timed to a tenth of a second, in well-known forest sections such
as Black Loch, Glentrool and Glengap.
Following a re-start from Dumfries at 8 am on Sunday (June 9) the crews will
head north and east from Dumfries to contest a 200 mile route with 63
competitive miles in the Forest of Ae, Castle O'er and Twiglees. The
champagne celebrations at the finish in the centre of Dumfries are expected
around 4.40 pm on Sunday.
