GOODWINE WINS PERRIS FORD FOCUS FEATURE, HEADS FOR IRWINDALE
Wally Pankratz' 396th USAC Western Midget Car feature start produced his
17th career victory Saturday night as the Orange, Calif. veteran captured
the 30-lap race at Plaza Park in Visalia, Calif.
Phil Goodwine of Mira Loma, Calif. earned his initial USAC feature triumph
in Saturday night's 20-lap USAC Ford Focus Midget Car race at Perris
(Calif.) Auto Speedway.
The USAC Ford Focus Midget Cars compete at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway this
Saturday night in a program switched from its originally-announced location
of Bakersfield, Calif. The Western Midget Cars are idle until May 11 when
they resume action at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif.
Pankratz, whose last USAC victory came nearly three years ago, led all 30
laps at Visalia in his Sta-Rite/HASA/Trench Shoring VanDyne/Edmunds to beat
Danny Olmstead, fast qualifier Jerome Rodela, Dallen McKenney and Danny
Stratton. Sixth-place Shane Scully emerged as the new series point leader
with an 11-point lead over Robby Flock, who flipped and finished 13th at
Visalia.
Goodwine was the fastest qualifier at Perris and trailed J.J. Ercse for the
first nine lap, then led the last 11 to beat Todd Hunsaker, Garrett Hansen,
Bobby Owens and Wayne McCormick. Ercse finished eighth.
