Delphi Recognized for Recycling Efforts at Take Pride, Ohio! Awards Ceremony

COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 15 -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) honored 11 Delphi facilities in the Midwest at its ninth annual Take Pride, Ohio! awards ceremony held recently in Columbus. Delphi was awarded with a 2002 Recycle, Ohio! award in the corporation/business category for its innovative efforts to reuse materials and thereby benefit local communities.

Identified as an environmental aspect under ISO 14001, the recycling effort was initiated through the Waste Elimination and Cost Awareness Reward Everyone (WE CARE) quality initiative, which is jointly utilized between Delphi and its UAW, USW and IUE-CWA partners. Delphi, with help from Midwest Iron & Metal and Industrial By-Product Solutions, L.L.C. (IBPS), undertook the effort, which applied the concepts of lean manufacturing, improved the methods of by-product collection and distribution, resulting in the recycling of more than 420 million pounds of materials over the last two years for more than 250 by-product streams. The effort also eliminated the need for significant amounts of new material in at least a dozen primary material lines. In addition, the 11 plants reduced by-product streams by nearly 30 percent and improved costs in the process.

``This annual awards program gives ODNR the opportunity to recognize and thank the best in recycling and litter prevention,'' said Ron Kolbash, chief of the ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention. ``This year's award recipients reflect the high quality and level of commitment of the state's many recycling and litter prevention programs.''

``Delphi is globally committed to reducing waste, conserving resources and recycling materials to improve and protect the environment,'' said Marty Cristo, Delphi's environmental manager for the Ohio region. ``We are proud to be honored by ODNR for our efforts in the region.''
