Goodson Looks to Play Cards Right at Ace
Altamahaw, NC - In 2001 Hal Goodson, driver of the #92 Black's Tire Service Chevrolet, exited Ace Speedway with the winner's trophy, after he dominated the 250 lap event. Last year, fans saw an exciting race with 32 cars taking the green flag, 12 cautions for 72 laps and one red flag.
"Ace is a tight track. Everyone gets bottled up quick here. The key to running good is to be out front. If you are in the back then that will lead to having a bigger chance of being involved in an accident," said Goodson. He also added that the biggest key to being successful at the tight 4/10s mile track is to have good brakes.
"This track is hard on both corners, entering turn one and turn three. It seems like a long time to make one lap. I like to think of it as running two 1/8th mile drag strips and turning around."
Entering the 2002 season, Goodson joined forces with Ricky Benton Racing and team mate Jason Sarvis.
"Jason (Sarvis) and I get along great together. He's real smart with the chassis, and I've been around racing for a while, so he's kind of like another crew chief," commented Goodson.
"Ricky Benton (Team Manager) helped me out when I ran in the All-Pro series, so we were already friends and then during the off season we hooked up and he brought me into his team. He lets me drive the car on the weekends, and I get to run my own business on the weekdays."
Team RBR and Goodson have simple thoughts for this year.
"At first we thought we were going to run a partial schedule for this year, and the team pulled together. We have recorded two decent runs, so right now we are looking at running the full season. My goal with this #92 team is to contend for the 2002 championship. My goal is to repeat at Ace," said the Darlington, S.C. resident.
You can catch the USAR Hooters ProCup Series running at Ace Speedway on Friday night, April 19, with the green flag scheduled to wave at 8:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.usarprocup.com
