HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (March 23, 2002) - In the first Hardeeville Motor
Speedway points race of the seson, Walter Reardon of Savannah, Ga. won the
O.C. Welch Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Late Models feature. The Legend Cars
feature race provided some great racing action as Garrett Shurling of
Ellabell, Ga. won overwhelmingly over runner-up Jonathan Haidon of Hilton
Head, S.C. Finishing a strong third was Kevin O'Brien, of Burton, S.C.
Don Dean of Sheldon, S.C. picked up the Xtreme Stock Car victory. Stephen
Moore of Harleysville, S.C. topped the Mini Stock field. Race fans were
also treated to the Lightning Lawnmower Races on both the 1/5-mile flat
track and the 1/3-mile high- banked oval. The lawnmowers reached speeds in
excess of 70 m.p.h.
The feature event showcasing the O.C. Welch Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Late
Models saw several lead changes and multiple bumps as cars were relegated
to the rear after many mishaps. The race started with Shane Jenkins of
Statesboro, Ga. and Leland Prewitt from Savannah, Ga. starting on the front
row quickly getting into some bumping sending Jenkins to the rear of the
field at the restart. When the checkered flag was dropped, young Walter
Reardon, driving in his first Late Model Series race came across first,
followed by Prewitt in second and Tom Haidon of Hilton Head, S.C. finishing
third. After the race, the young Reardon said he "appreciated everyone that
has helped him and the other drivers for running such a good race."
Reardon is a graduate of the Legends Cars Series that is producing young
talent all over the United States.
Next weekend, there will be no racing at the Hardeeville Motor Speedway,
however racing will return on Saturday night, April 27th when the Southern
All Star Pro Truck Series makes its first visit ever to the speedway.
