13, 2002
The Streets of Long Beach, Calif. - 1.968-Mile Temporary Street Course
Round 2 of 20 on the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series

Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard will
start Sunday's Grand Prix of Long Beach from the outside-third-row position
after final qualifying this afternoon on the scenic seaside streets of Long
Beach. Kanaan, again the fastest Honda, toured the 1.9-mile temporary
circuit in 1 minute, 9.411 seconds (103.562 mph), more than a tenth of a
second faster than his best lap in provisional qualifying on Friday.

Jimmy Vasser grabbed the pole position with a fast lap of 1:07.742 (104.585
mph), edging out Friday's fast qualifier Cristiano da Matta, whose best lap
today was a 1:07.745 (104.580 mph) effort. Bruno Junqueira will start third
after a fast lap of 1:08.097 (104.040 mph), followed by Kenny Brack at
1:08.126 (103.996 mph), Townsend Bell at 1:08.267 (103.781 mph) and Kanaan.

Race time Sunday is 12:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. EDT) and it will air
live on the FOX network. Sunday-morning warmup is set for 8:45 a.m. PDT
(11:45 a.m. EDT).

TONY KANAAN QUOTES

"It could be better, but it could be a lot worse, too. I don't think we
could have gotten any more out of the car again today. We definitely would
have had to try some really radical stuff with the car if we were going to
be able to make it go any faster. But that's the way you play this game.
You do your very best with what you've got on any given day. I like this
track a lot, so I'm very confident I can go fast every time I go out there.
So I'm hoping that will make a difference for us here tomorrow. I'm
expecting nothing but the best from us tomorrow. I hope that translates
into a win. I came away from Monterrey without any points, so I need to
leave here with as many as I can get. About 20 would be nice!"
