Jim Long Wins "IRWIN Crew Chief of the Week"
Honors
VERNON HILLS, Ill., April 10, 2002 - This week, the No. 5 Kellogg's
Chevrolet team posted its best effort of the 2002 season, both at the finish
line and in the pits. As a result, team crew chief Jim Long takes home this
week's "IRWIN Rough to the Finish" award for the team's efforts at the
Samsung/RadioShack 500 in Fort Worth, Texas.
During Monday's rain-delayed race, Terry Labonte was able to rally from one
lap down on two different occasions to finish 10th place, posting his first
Top-10 finish of the year and gaining two spots in the series point
standings. Labonte, who started 27th, advanced as high as fourth place,
largely due to a series of lightning-fast pit stops. Under the watchful eye
of Long, the pit crew's efforts helped the two-time champion hold his track
position on the 1.5-mile oval notorious for its one-lane racing groove and
stingy with its lead changes.
"We had to fight through some adversity several times during the race," said
Long. "We knew we had a strong car, but the breaks just didn't go our way
this week. I'm excited that we finished as high as we did, especially for
Terry with Texas being his home state. It gives us the confidence boost we
need moving forward with the rest of the season. Terry did a heck of a job
battling today, and my hat's off to him and this whole crew for their
efforts."
Each week throughout the 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup season, IRWIN, makers of
professional power tool accessories like MARATHON PLUS saw blades and
SPEEDBOR flat bits, is partnering with Performance Racing Network to honor
the crew chief who had the toughest day in the pits, but still managed to
help his team to a strong finish.
The IRWIN Rough to the Finish Award includes an assortment of tools for the
crew chief and a $250 check donated to the Connie Parsons Memorial Fund in
the racing team's name. The year-end winner of the crew chief points
standings will win a $5,000 check donated to the Fund. Race fans wanting to
make a contribution to the Fund may do so by sending it to The Connie
Parsons Memorial Fund, PO Box 443, Ellerbee, NC 28338.
