Delphi's Forewarn-Back Up Aid Featured On Several Ford and Lincoln Mercury Models

TROY, Mich., April 9 -- Delphi Corporation announced today that it will supply the rear-warning system known as Ford Extended Rear Park Assist for three Ford and Lincoln Mercury models this year. The Lincoln Town Car, Navigator and the Ford Expedition will all offer Delphi's Forewarn® Back Up Aid (BUA) in the 2003 model year. Other models will feature the system next year.

The Forewarn® Back Up Aid system uses a combination of radar and ultrasonic sensors to ``see'' objects in the rear path of the vehicle. The Forewarn® BUA system gives the driver additional time to react by looking out a greater distance. The BUA system helps alert the driver to unknown objects, as well as enhancing the ability to park close to known objects.

The Forewarn® Back Up Aid system gives the driver some added vision and capability to help in those backing maneuvers.''

The Delphi Back Up Aid uses a 17 GHz radar sensor in conjunction with two ultrasonic sensors to warn drivers of objects behind the vehicle. The Delphi 17 GHz sensor design is currently the only OEM installed short-range radar sensor licensed by the FCC.

The system automatically activates when the vehicle is put into reverse and helps detect both stationary and moving objects. The BUA system senses a range of about five meters or about 15 feet. This extended range provides warning to the driver with sufficient time to react for normal backing maneuvers. The Forewarn® system provides coverage during all backing circumstances. In addition, the system provides improved performance in adverse weather conditions.

The new Expedition and Navigator give an audible warning that increases in intensity as the vehicle gets closer to an object. The Lincoln Town Car will provide an audible warning and visual LED lights.

``The Back Up Aid system adds another layer of accident prevention when drivers are backing up,'' Owens said. ``Back Up Aid will make parking more convenient and at the same time help reduce rear-bumper accidents.''

Delphi's Forewarn® line of collision-warning products includes Back Up Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control, first in a line of driver convenience and warning products.
