HOOTERS: New Smyrna Story
Gill Joins the Untouchables Club
Bobby Gill dominates the Jackaroo Sauces 250 presented by Daytona Dodge
New Smyrna Beach, FL - Bobby Gill has been quoted as saying "In order to be the man, you have to beat the man," and he is showing the rest of the USAR Hooters ProCup Series Southern Division competitors what it's like to "be the man."
Gill, driver of the #5 Carrera Shocks, Triple Diamond Enterprises Ford led 143 laps, collected the Southern Pride Lap Leader Award and went on to pick up his third win this year, being the only driver to reach victory lane in 2002.
"There is lots of work being done on my race cars. We came here to win and not to run second," said Gill after he climbed from his car in victory lane. Gill's other victories in the 2002 season have been the season opener at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, FL and Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL. When asked about his plans for the next USAR Hooters ProCup Southern Division race at Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, NC, Gill jokingly replied, "I think we might go there, start in the back, and mess around back there."
The Jackaroo Sauces 250 presented by Daytona Dodge, was the first race held at New Smyrna Speedway, which featured 16 caution flags for 92 laps, and 12 lead changes among four different drivers. Mario Gosselin, driver of the #10 Ford, started the race on the pole, and also collected an extra $1,000 for leading the Lucas Oil Products half-way leader award. Gosselin went on to lead 74 laps and ended the race in 13th position. Jay Blair, driver of the #2 Creel Brothers, Inc., Dixie Motors Chevrolet, and Andrew Medlin, driver of the #8 ANECO Electrical Construction Ford, collected the W.J. Plemons Investment Hard Charger Award. Medlin also went on to collect an extra $1,000, earning the Miller Lite Rookie of the Race award, for being the highest finishing rookie. Team RBR and driver Hal Goodson won the CV Products Engine Builder of the Race award.
The next race for the USAR Hooters ProCup Southern Division will be held on Friday night April 19, at Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, NC. The season opener race for the USAR Hooters ProCup Northern Division will be held Saturday, April 13, at Jennerstown Speedway, in Jennerstown, PA.
