Dr. Steve M. Rohde Joins Quantum Signal

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--April 8, 2002--Dr. Steve M. Rohde has joined Quantum Signal LLC as Senior Consultant and head of Automotive operations.
The announcement was made today by Dr. Mitchell Rohde, co-founder of Quantum Signal. Dr. Rohde recently retired as Technical Director for Global Technology Planning, Electrical and Controls Technology, Virtual Reality, and Training and Communications in General Motors' Math-Based activity.
Dr. Rohde received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1967, and received MS and PhD degrees in Mathematics from Lehigh University in 1969 and 1970, respectively. He began his extraordinary career with General Motors in the early 70s, and held leadership positions throughout his career with the company. In 1984 Dr. Rohde was appointed Head of the Systems Engineering Activity at Project Trilby, a groundbreaking project aimed at understanding the benefits of the integration of computers and advanced electronics into automotive vehicles. Subsequently, he headed the Systems Analysis and Information Management Department at GM's Systems Engineering Center and was instrumental in bringing Systems Engineering into General Motors. He has spearheaded research and development projects in Tribology, advanced propulsion systems including hybrid vehicles, and virtual product development.
Dr. Rohde is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has served in a number of capacities on ASME leadership committees, and was Chairman of Executive Committees of the ASME Computers in Engineering and Tribology Divisions. He has authored over 100 papers, edited nine books, and holds several patents. Dr. Rohde has received numerous honors and awards including from the ASME, the American Society of Testing Materials, and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Dr. Rohde joins Quantum Signal LLC, an Ann Arbor Michigan based startup co-founded by his son, Dr. Mitchell Rohde. Quantum is a consulting firm that develops cutting-edge solutions for clients in a wide variety of industries, including automotive. Quantum specializes in what is called signal processing, a form of advanced engineering mathematics that is only barely being tapped in the automotive industry. "Over my 30 plus years at GM I witnessed and helped enable the transition from hardware-based product development to a more math-based or "virtual" product development process. This approach utilizes state of the art software tools (e.g., CAE) and leverages increasing compute power. Advanced signal processing is a technology ready to further evolve -- and even revolutionize -- many areas of the automotive engineering process. It will provide engineers with new technologies and tools for virtual product development and synthesis. I am pleased to become a part of this effort, and, in particular, Quantum Signal," says Dr. Rohde.
"It is a great honor to have Steve join Quantum Signal," says Dr. William J. Williams, one of the company's co-founders, "His visionary work bringing mathematics and computers into the mainstream of automotive engineering at General Motors is extraordinary. Quantum's advanced signal processing technologies are poised to change the way automotive engineering is accomplished, and Steve will help to make this happen."
Founded in 1999, Quantum Signal LLC is an engineering services company specializing in advanced signal processing and pragmatic algorithmic solutions for its automotive, aerospace, biometrics, and other clients. As a leader in this dynamic field, the Ann Arbor-based firm is transitioning exciting signal processing technologies out of the "ivory tower" and into a wide variety of commercial applications.
