GM : "NJ Layoffs Delayed"
April 5, 2002 LINDEN, N.J. AP is reporting that due to increased truck sales General Motors will delay the layoff of 1,000 workers as part of the elimination of the plant's second shift.
In mid-February, GM said the workers' last day would be April 15.
But in a flier distributed Wednesday to workers, GM said the action would be delayed until May 24 because of improved sales and the need to meet the demand.
The news follows an announcement last week that GM would give workers an extra week on the job in a move aimed at boosting vacation benefits.
Under the original elimination plan, workers would have been one week short of qualifying for 50 percent vacation pay under their UAW contract with GM.
