ZETEC CHAMPIONSHIP MANDATES HANS DEVICE
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (April 4, 2002) – The Formula Ford 2000 Zetec
Championship today mandated that all competitors must utilize the Hubbard
Downing HANS (Head and Neck Support) Device beginning in 2003.
In an effort to increase driver safety, Technical Bulletin 02-03, issued
April 4, 2002, updates the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship Driver
Equipment regulations, section 616. The bulletin states: “Beginning in 2003,
the Hubbard Downing HANS (Head and Neck Support) Device must be utilized by
all drivers during all on-track activities.”
While the regulation does not come into effect until 2003, it is strongly
recommended that drivers beginning using the device as soon as possible.
Currently, the HANS Device is available two weeks after placing an order, at
a cost of $1275. Additional information on the device is available at
www.hansdevice.com.
“Safety is key component of modern-day motorsports and the HANS Device has
shown it significantly reduces the risk of a severe spinal cord injury,”
said Formula Ford 2000 Championship Chief Steward Beaux Barfield. “Aside
from the obvious safety aspect, the introduction of the device in the Zetec
Championship further prepares our drivers to move up the racing ladder.
After all you have to use it in CART and the IRL, so getting used to it now
can only be beneficial. I fully expect the majority of our drivers to be
using the device by the oval races at IRP and Milwaukee.”
The 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship continues with Rounds Three
and Four at Mosport International Raceway, May 18-19, as part of the
Victoria Day Trans-Am Weekend.
