Toyota Announces Best-Ever March Sales and a Record-Breaking First Quarter

TORRANCE, Calif., April 2 -- Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., today reported best-ever March sales of 157,028 vehicles, an increase of 4.1 percent over last year. The strong sales month also marked a record-breaking first quarter that totaled 409,628 units, also up 4.1 percent over the same period last year.

``Strong personal income growth combined with new-vehicle price deflation has been a win-win for consumers,'' said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. ``Industry sales continue to drive the economy by outpacing earlier forecasts by a significant margin.''

Toyota Division enjoyed a best-ever March with sales of 135,767 units, up 3.7 percent. The Lexus Division also boasted a best-ever March, with 21,261 units sold, an increase of 6.4 percent over the previous record set last year.

The Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) broke the 10,000-unit sales mark with 10,169 vehicles sold, up 28.4 percent over the same period last year and resulting in a best-ever sales month. The Sequoia full-size SUV followed closely behind and also enjoyed a record month with 6,335 units sold, an increase of 5.9 percent. The Tundra recorded best-ever March sales, with sales of 9,882 units, up 14.2 percent over the same period last year.

Lexus Division's best-ever March was fueled by record-breaking passenger car sales of 13,795 units, up 7.7 percent. The all-new ES 300 entry-luxury sedan posted 6,440 units sold, an increase of 99.6 percent.

The RX 300 SUV also reported increased sales of 6,723 units, up 5.3 percent over the same period last year.
