Record March Sales Drive Mitsubishi

CYPRESS, Calif., April 2 -- Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA) today reported March sales of 32,428 units, marking the best March in company history and a 23 percent gain over March sales in 2001 based on the daily selling rate (DSR). The record March capped Mitsubishi Motors' best first quarter in company history with 90,299 units sold, a 25 percent increase over first quarter 2001 based on DSR.

``Our extraordinary momentum justifies our very optimistic outlook for 2002,'' said MMSA President and COO Pierre Gagnon. ``We are off to a record start, which is exactly what we needed in order to have a fourth record year in a row.''

Lancer sales continue to exceed expectations, delivering 7,073 units in March which represents the stylish compact sedan's second best sales month since first appearing in showrooms last summer.

    Some figures of note for MMSA's March 2002 sales:
    -- March 2002 sales of 32,428 vehicles, up 23.0 percent based on DSR over
       last year's March sales of 27,431 vehicles; sales were up 18.2 percent
       based on total volume
    -- Lancer had its second best month ever in March with 7,073 units sold

    Some figures of note for MMSA's first quarter 2002 sales:
    -- First quarter 2002 sales of 90,299 units sold, up 24.6 percent based on
       DSR over first quarter 2001 sales of 73,411 units; first quarter sales
       were up 23.0 percent based on total volume
    -- Galant had its best first quarter ever with 29,075 units sold, up
       21.6 percent over sales during first quarter 2001; sales of Galant were
       up 20.1 percent based on total volume
    -- Eclipse Spyder had its best first quarter ever with 4,804 units sold,
       up 8.8 percent based on DSR over sales during first quarter 2001; sales
       of Eclipse Spyder were up 7.4 percent based on total volume
