Safe Skies Alliance to Evaluate I.D. Systems, Inc.'s Technology for Aircraft Ground Support Equipment Safety & Security
HACKENSACK, N.J.--April 2, 2002-- I.D. Systems, Inc. announced today that National Safe Skies Alliance (Safe Skies), under the auspices of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), will be testing the Company's Wireless Asset Net(TM) fleet security and management system for aircraft ground support equipment. The program is scheduled to commence on June 1, 2002, at McGee-Tyson Airport in Knoxville, Tennessee. Delta Air Lines, Inc. will provide the vehicles to be equipped with I.D. Systems' technology.
Safe Skies is a non-profit organization formed to serve the public interest in aviation safety and security by providing impartial testing and effective evaluation of safety and security systems. Funding for Safe Skies is provided by its member institutions and the U.S. Department of Transportation. The FAA utilizes Safe Skies as an operational testing ground for newly developed security technologies. Safe Skies' evaluation of I.D. Systems' Wireless Asset Net is designed to assess the effectiveness of the system's wireless command and control over aircraft ground support equipment at commercial airports throughout the United States.
In vulnerability assessments of commercial airports, multiple threat scenarios involve the unauthorized use of vehicles to transport potential threats directly to aircraft. These vehicles may include aircraft tow tractors, cargo loaders, baggage tractors, fuel trucks, and catering trucks. With the Wireless Asset Net, anyone who wishes to operate a vehicle that services aircraft must first interface with I.D. Systems' intelligent vehicle hardware, which can incorporate virtually any type of electronic or biometric identification, such as a smart card, proximity card, or fingerprint scanner. Only if the person were authorized for that particular vehicle, in that particular area of the airport, at that particular time of day, would he/she be able to start the vehicle.
Importantly for airlines -- which typically operate thousands of units of ground support equipment at each of their hub airports -- the Wireless Asset Net incorporates numerous functions, beyond security, to reduce fleet operating costs. For example, the system monitors vehicle utilization to justify "right-sizing" the fleet, transmits electronic vehicle safety checklists to detect emerging vehicle repair issues, automates preventative maintenance planning to reduce repair costs, and monitors vehicle impacts to eliminate anonymous damage caused by accidents. The system also provides significant productivity enhancements such as real-time vehicle and driver location tracking, and two-way text dispatching.
Kenneth Ehrman, President and Chief Operating Officer of I.D. Systems, said, "We are very excited at this opportunity to expand our presence in the airport security arena. Our patented technology has demonstrated significant benefits for Fortune 100 companies that utilize large fleets of mobile industrial equipment, and we are confident that every major airline in the world can benefit from our technology as well. By providing unique tools that address the ongoing issues of fleet productivity, abuse, and maintenance costs--as well as current airport security issues--our Wireless Asset Net system can provide airlines with the means of reducing costs and improving safety and security at the same time."
