Powell Back On Top In Latest Point Standings
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 1, 2002) -- The Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series released point standings following its second event of the 2002 season. After scoring their first win of the season at Fontana, defending champions Doug Goad and Devon Powell claimed the top spot in the Grand Sport I driver standings, as did their #11 Powell Motorsports Corvette in the team standings. Both hold a narrow six-point lead over Doncaster Racing's Scott Maxwell and David Empringham, who won the season opener in Daytona. Paul Mears Jr. and the #66 SpeedSource Porsche GT3 Cup are also in the hunt for the GS I championship in third place, only seven points behind the leaders.
Jeff Lapcevich and John Shreiner remain tied atop the Grand Sport II driver standings, extending their lead in the class from three to seven points after finishing third at the California race. Their #30 Shreiner Racing Mustang also maintained its lead in the class team standings, while the battle for second place in the class tightened. SpeedSource's #63 Porsche 911 took over the second-place spot, with Max Q Motorsports only one point behind in third.
The closest Grand-Am Cup points race continues to be the Sport Touring I class, with the top-eight teams separated by only eight points. Team Lexus drivers Jean-Francois Dumoulin and Tim Gaffney moved themselves and their #2 Lexus IS300 into a one-point lead in the class after finishing sixth in California. Villaconn International's #36 BMW Z3 Coupe and its drivers Bransen Patch and Don Salama advanced to second place, followed by Power Racing Team's #77 entry in third, two points behind the leader.
Rounding out the top-eight ST I teams, each separated by only one point, are: Team Lexus #3 IS300 (fourth), Team Spartanburg #72 BMW (fifth), Villaconn International #34 BMW (sixth), Team Lexus #0 IS300 (seventh) and King Motorsports #64 Acura (eighth).
After picking up its second-straight win of the season, Bill Fenton Motorsports, along with drivers Bill Beede and Bill Fenton, maintained their top ranking in the Sport Touring II team and driver standings. The HRPworld.com team continues to hold on to second place in the class, but dropped from three to six points back, as did its drivers Will and Wayne Nonnamaker. DTM Engineering remained in the third position in the ST II team standings with a 12-point deficit to the leader.
In the manufacturer standings, Corvette moved into a tie with Porsche in the GS I class, while Ford kept its GS II lead. After scoring a GS II victory in California, BMW moved to within five points of the leader, followed closely by Porsche. Lexus took over the top spot in the Sport Touring I class, with BMW dropping to second place, three points back. Acura maintained its third-place position in the ST I standings, but cut its points deficit from 10 points to four. However, Acura continues to the lead the Sport Touring II class, increasing its lead to 12 points over Mazda.
The next stop for the Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series is Phoenix International Raceway, April 18-20. The series will race twin 250-mile races, separating the Grand Sport and Sport Touring fields for the first time. Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series Driver Point Standings
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 1, 2002) -- The Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series awards points to drivers based upon their finish in their respective class. Although drivers may race in more than one class during a race, they are only awarded points in the first car they drive. Only drivers holding valid Grand American Road Racing Association memberships are awarded points. The driver points reflect the top-20 drivers in each class after the second race of the season.
