Theys On Top In Latest Rolex Series Points

Theys On Top In Latest Rolex Series Points

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 28, 2002) -- After picking up his third-straight win of the season, Didier Theys stands alone atop driver point standings in the Rolex Sports Car Series premier SportsRacing Prototype class. Theys had previously shared the top spot with co-driver Mauro Baldi, but after teaming up with rookie Fredy Lienhard Jr., in his latest victory, the Belgian solely secured the top ranking. Doran Lista Racing also maintained its number-one ranking in the team standings after its Grand American 400 victory with Theys and Lienhard Jr., at the wheel of its #27 Judd-powered Dallara.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in latest SportsRacing Prototype point standings lies in second and third place, with rookie driver Chris Dyson, son of team owner and driver Rob Dyson holding onto the second-place ranking, two points ahead of two-time champion James Weaver, currently in third place. Although Dyson and Weaver shared Dyson Racing Team's #16 Judd Crawford entry at the last two events, Dyson was in the team's #20 Ford Riley & Scott at the Rolex 24 At Daytona that outlasted Weaver's #16 car.

After sharing the lead in the SportsRacing Prototype II class, Terry Borcheller emerged as the lone leader in the class in the latest driver standings. Borcheller had previously shared the top spot with his co-driver Anthony Lazzaro but moved to the front when Lazzaro was forced to sit out the Grand American 400 with an injury.

With three-straight SRPII wins this season, Borcheller and Lazzaro's #8 Nissan Lola of Rand Racing continues to hold a strong lead in the class team standings. Darren Law moved up to second in the class driver standings, 16 points behind Borcheller, while his #07 BMW Picchio of Momentum Motorcars/G&W Motorsports is also in second place in the team standings, 15 points back.

The Rolex Series' tightest points race is in the GTS class where three drivers are tied atop the standings. Co-drivers Tommy Byrne and Richard Millman previously led the class, but last weekend's victory by defending champion Chris Bingham moved him into a three-way tie with the pair. However, Bingham's Park Place Racing #5 Saleen S7R increased its lead in the GTS team standings from one point to four over Millman and Byrne's Team Greeneman.

After holding a five-point lead in the earlier GT driver standings, Kevin Buckler opened up his advantage to 12 points after picking up his second win in the class at the Grand American 400. Co-drivers Joao Barbosa and Thierry Perrier, currently tied for second, had an early exit from the race when their Perspective Racing #24 Mosler MT900 R suffered mechanical problems. That not only dropped the pair further behind Buckler, but also cost Perspective Racing the lead in the team standings.

Buckler's The Racer's Group is now on top in the GT team standings with a six-point lead over Perspective Racing and a 12-point lead over Ferrari of Washington.

The battle for supremacy in the American GT class continues to be a fight between Flis Motorsports teammates. Michael Ciasulli and Paul Menard won the class at the Grand American 400 in the team's #90 Corvette after Flis' #09 Corvette was forced to retire with mechanical trouble. It marked the third-straight victory for Ciasulli, who is on top the AGT driver standings with a 10-point lead over his teammates in the #09 Corvette, defending champions Craig Conway and Doug Goad.

Although he won at the wheel of the #90 Corvette at the last two events, Ciasulli's first victory came when he was a part of Flis' winning #09 Corvette team at the Rolex 24 At Daytona. The team's #09 entry jumped out to a strong lead over its #90 sister car in the AGT team standings after the first race -- a lead that has now been narrowed to only one point by the #90 Corvette's back-to-back wins.

Despite Flis Motorsports' pair of Corvettes holding the top-two spots in the AGT team standings, ACP Motorsports and Morgan Dollar Motorsports have managed to keep themselves within striking distance. Second-place ACP is only five points behind the leader, while Mogran Dollar sits seven points back in fourth place.

In the manufacturer rankings, Judd and Dallara continue to dominate the SRP engine and chassis standings, while Nissan and Lola hold the top spots in the SRPII class. Saleen has an eight-point advantage over Porsche in the GTS class, but Porsche remains on top in the GT class, 14 points ahead of Mosler. Chevrolet continues its strong hold in AGT with a 33-point lead over Ford.

The next round of the Rolex Sports Car Series will be the United Auto 200 presented by azcentral.com and cars.com at Phoenix International Raceway, April 20. More information on the Rolex Sports Car Series is available online at www.grand-am.com.
