Chrysler Unveils PT Cruiser Turbo Version
NEW YORK Reuters reported that the Chrysler arm of DaimlerChrysler AG will unveil on Wednesday a turbocharged version of its Chrysler PT Cruiser to help spur interest in the retro-styled hatchback.
Chrysler said the turbo PT Cruiser would go into production later this year at its factory in Toluca, Mexico. The company did not immediately release pricing and production details.
The turbo PT Cruiser engine produces 215 horsepower, a 43 percent increase over the standard unit, and comes with either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic.
The PT Cruiser was a runaway hit when Chrysler launched it in 2000, giving Chrysler an image boost with customers paying thousands over the retail price. In addition, the PT Cruiser is classified as a truck under U.S. fuel economy rules, helping Chrysler sell more high-profit pickups and sport utility vehicles.
But sales have cooled as supply caught up with demand, and Chrysler began offering rebates for the PT Cruiser in parts of the United States earlier this year.
In addition to the turbo version, Chrysler has announced it will build a convertible version in 2004, and offers other editions with cosmetic changes such as plastic wood-grain paneling on the sides.
