Fontana - Rand Racing qualifying
California Speedway
qualifying, March 22, 2002
class pole
Terry Borcheller celebrated his 36th birthday at California Speedway by
earning the SRPII class pole position for Saturday's Rolex Sports Car Series
race. Borcheller drove the No. 8 Rand Racing Nissan Lola to first in class
and third overall on the 22-car grid with a lap time of one minute 32.827
seconds on the 2.81-mile road course.
"I pushed," he said. "I wanted to get the best lap of the weekend. I could
have bettered it by a few tenths [of a second], but it was a good lap, I was
happy with it. Everything all weekend has gone in a very positive direction
and we've had no mishaps."
Borcheller will start the four-hour race for Rand Racing. His co-drivers
this week are Ralf Kelleners and Bill Rand.
international cast
Rand Racing team members hail from 12 countries - Bosnia, Canada, Columbia,
England, Germany, Guatemala, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, Sweden
and the United States. The No. 8 Rand Racing Nissan Lola carries the flags
of the home countries of its crew.
"The flags are on the car because I wanted to give each team member a bit
more credit," said team owner Bill Rand. "Without them our wins wouldn't be
possible. We come fully prepared to win and we're on track every session.
That's what we need to be competitive."
Rand also noted the strength of the international group. "One thing that is
really neat is the cohesiveness of this team," he said. "Everybody comes
from all over the world, and they come together and work as one. You
wouldn't know they're from 12 different countries."
new sponsor
The Rand Racing Lola now carries the logo of its new sponsor, BG Products,
Inc. The company manufactures and distributes specialty lubricants, greases,
chemicals and service equipment in North America, Europe, the Middle East,
Asia and the Far East. BG Products also sponsors Rand and Indy Racing League
driver Anthony Lazzaro, five Toyota Atlantic Championship drivers, three
NASCAR Busch Series cars and motorcycle and NHRA teams.
Sherry Huxtable, manager of motorsports for BG Products, notes the diverse
sponsorship program benefits the company's customers. "We have developed a
lubricant specifically for racing," she said, "But any time we can be on the
track, regardless of which engine it is, helps us to develop products for
passenger vehicles as well."
