Enova Delivers Hybrid Systems for Hyundai Bus Program
TORRANCE, Calif.--March 21, 2002--Enova Systems (OTCBB:ENVA) has delivered series hybrid drive systems to Hyundai Motor Company of Korea for their hybrid bus program. The Enova-equipped buses will be Hyundai's showcase hybrid transit vehicles. The delivery of the series hybrid drive systems marks a major milestone in the Hyundai-Enova strategic alliance. The drive systems were manufactured by Enova as a result of the two companies' joint hybrid development program.
Series hybrid drive systems are distinguished for utilizing both an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric drive motor. The result is maximum power and greater efficiency -- with less fuel consumed and fewer polluting emissions. The series hybrid is ideal for transit bus applications requiring a powerful electric motor for "transient loads" such as acceleration, while relying on a much smaller engine to operate the on-board generator for "cruising loads." The operation of the smaller engine at constant speeds yields significant improvements in emissions and fuel economy, as part of a vehicle that delivers the road performance expected by customers.
The series hybrid drive system is an Enova Panther Genset, which consists of a 50kW electric motor, a motor controller and a Diesel engine meeting stringent Euro 3 emission specifications. The electric motor and controller are part of Enova's complete line of drive systems, comprising 30kW, 60kW, 90kW, 120kW and 240kW electric and hybrid electric systems. Highly flexible to meet customer demands, the hybrid drive systems can be integrated with ICE's, Capstone microturbines, fuel cells and other power generation components to provide a complete alternative fuel power train.
"Hyundai Motor Company and Enova are strategic partners in developing electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles for the global market. Hyundai's choice of Enova's hybrid drive system for their buses is a continuing confirmation of the reliability and robustness of our drive systems. 2001 was a significant year for our Panther drive systems in the international market place, and Hyundai's purchase recognizes Enova's position as a major provider of hybrid drive systems in the midsize transit market," said Carl D. Perry, President and CEO.
