FORMULA FORD 2000 ZETEC CHAMPIONSHIP ALUMNI RULE 675 CLASS
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (March 20, 2002)—This past weekend, Formula Ford 2000
Zetec Championship alumni dominated the LMP 675 class at the fiftieth
running of the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring.
At the completion of the prestigious spring endurance race, four former
Zetec Championship stood on the podium. Driving a brand-new MG Lola
EX257-AER, Mike Durand and Duncan Dayton captured the LMP 675 class win and
finished seventh overall. Dayton is the career leader in Zetec Championship
starts with 53 and raced in the championship from 1994 to 1998, capturing
one win and one pole. Durand raced in the Zetec Championship from 1998 to
2000, capturing three top-10 finishes. Finishing second in LMP 675 class at
Sebring was Jeffrey Jones along with his brother Ryan and Father Jeff in a
Reynard 2KQ. Jeffrey is in his first year of competition in the Zetec
Championship and won Round Two of 2002 season earlier in the weekend. Ryan
previously raced in the Zetec Championship in 1998, posting one top-10
finish.
The success of Zetec Championship alumni in the LMP 675 class at Sebring
continues the domination of the smaller prototype classes by Zetec
Championship alumni. In February, Anthony Lazzaro captured the SportsRacing
Prototype II class win at the Rolex 24 Hours. The class win at Daytona was
the second consecutive class win by a Zetec Championship alumni, as Andy
Lally won the class in 2001. Joining Lally on the podium in 2001 was Ryan
Hampton, who finished second in class and was the 2000 Grand American Road
Racing SRP II Champion. In addition to winning the Rolex 24 Hours, Lally won
the Grand-Am SRP II Championship last year, while Larry Oberto won the FIA
Sports Car SR2 Championship, after winning the Grand-Am SRP II Championship
with Hampton in 2000.
The Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship continues its development of the
world's best young drivers with Rounds Three and Four at Mosport
International Raceway, May 18-19.
