Bombardier ATV Copper World Indy 200 - Qualifying Notes/Quotes
- Saturday, March 16, 2002
Phoenix International Raceway - Phoenix, Ariz. - 1-Mile Oval
Round 2 of 15 on the 2002 Indy Racing League
Felipe Giaffone and the #21 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Chevrolet G-Force will
start Sunday's Bombardier ATV Copper World Indy 200 from the outside of the
second row, as the 2001 Indy Racing League Rookie of the Year equaled his
career-best IRL qualifying effort today on the Phoenix International Raceway
mile oval.
Giaffone, who turned the sixth-best laps in practice on Friday and the
seventh-best practice lap this morning, turned it up a notch in qualifying.
He turned a fast lap of 20.215 seconds (an average of 178.083 mph) on his
second of two green-flag qualifying laps this afternoon, good for fourth on
tomorrow's starting grid. It was his best IRL qualifying effort since last
season's event at Homestead, Fla.
CART FedEx Championship Series refugee Helio Castroneves earned the pole
today with a lap of 20.012/179.888, followed by defending series champion
Sam Hornish at 20.029/179.735 and Jeff Ward at 20.156/178.602.
Race time Sunday is 2 p.m. MST (4 p.m. EST) and it will be broadcast live by
ABC-TV. The Indy Racing Today pre-race show can be seen live on ESPN2 at
3:30 p.m. EST.
FELIPE GIAFFONE
"I am really happy with my car and with everyone on the Hollywood/Mo Nunn
team. I pushed a little bit harder today and the car was right there. We had
a better set-up than we had in the practices yesterday and today. I had the
sixth-best lap on Friday, even though the car had some understeering in the
first practice. And I had the seventh-best lap in practice this morning.
Now, we just have to keep on working like this in the race tomorrow. My team
always gives me good cars. We struggled in Miami, but I think finishing
seventh was actually pretty good. I think for tomorrow, we're in good
position for a top finish. We just have to stay out of trouble."
