JONES CAPTURES FIRST CAREER POLE AT SEBRING

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JONES CAPTURES FIRST CAREER POLE AT SEBRING

SEBRING, FLA. (March 14, 2002) –Jeffrey Jones, of Sarasota, Fla., captured
the pole for Friday’s Round Two race of the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec
Championship season at Sebring International Raceway. Completing the
top-three was Bryan Sellers, of Centerville, Ohio, and Anthony Massari, of
Miami, Fla. The top ACC qualifier was Doug Smith, of Plantation, Fla.
Unlike the past three days, qualifying for Round Two was run under heavy
fog early in the morning. Early in the session it appeared that the fog was
lifting and number of drivers attempted to post quick times, with times
being in the high 2:05’s. As the session progressed the fog returned and
conditions varied from corner to corner. Not deterred the drivers began
going quicker and at the halfway mark of the session, Sellers, in the No. 3
Yes Network/3 Dimensional Services/Arai Helmets/Sparco/Cape Motorsports Van
Diemen Ford, had posted a fast time of 2:04.734. Driving the No. 7 JDC
Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, Massari quickly responded, posting a time of
2:04.950 to move into second position. With 10-minutes remaining in the
session Jones, driving the No. 2 JCI Chemicals/Winchester/Cape Motorsports
Van Diemen Ford, posted a lap of 2:04.423 (107.054 mph) to jump to the top
of the charts. At the closing stages, Sellers attempted to better Jones’
time, but went off course, ensuring Jones his first career Zetec
Championship pole and an all Cape Motorsports front-row.
“We knew given the colder weather, times would be quicker today,” said
Jones, who contested the British Formula 3 Championship last year. “The
conditions kept changing, so you were always looking for more grip and we
probably could have gone quicker. I’m really pleased for Cape Motorsports.
They’ve worked really hard and deserve the one-two start.”
“It was a rough session,” said Sellers, who has the pole for Round One on
Thursday. “We made some changes last night expecting it to be hot, but
obviously we went the wrong way. I heard Jeffrey’s [Jones] time late in the
session and just pushed a little to hard.”
“Things are just gelling between myself and JDC Motorsports,” said Massari.
“We battled some problems early in testing, but things have been getting
better every session. I want to make the most of this opportunity.”
Completing the top-five for Race Two was Mark Wilkins, of Toronto, Ont.,
Can., who was runner-up in the Canadian F1600 Championship last year and
Luis Schiavo, of Caracas, Venezuela, who raced in STAR Mazda in 2001.
