Are You Kidding Me?-Acura-Branded Golf Game for Handhelds
LOS ANGELES--March 12, 2002-- Pointing toward the future of advertising on mobile devices, Internet consulting and development firm Genex and mobile software developer AvantGo, Inc. today announced that the two companies have collaborated on a new sponsorship opportunity for Acura -- the first of its kind -- in the form of a Palm OS interactive game, designed for golf enthusiasts.
The Acura-sponsored golf game opens with a 360-degree view of the Acura MDX sport utility vehicle, and includes an Acura banner at the start of each hole. Players can compete to hit a hole-in-one and be taken to a clubhouse, which also highlights the MDX. The Acura Golf game comes complete with a course designer, which enables players to create their own golf holes on-device and ``beam'' them to other players.
The downloadable game is available on the AvantGo mobile Internet service (http://ami.avantgo.com/channels/index.html), via a dedicated Acura Golf channel that also offers free PGA golf news, a golf course locator, and handicap calculator from GolfServ in addition to the game. Information on the new Acura SUV is featured throughout the Acura Golf channel.
Through early March, the campaign had generated more than four million impressions, with click-through rates of 1.04 percent on the Acura Golf Channel ads and 1.53 percent on the Golf Game ads. Overall, the ads have triggered in excess of 11,000 leads for Acura.
``This is the first time we've presented advertising on a PDA, a potentially rich new channel to reach a key element of Acura's core market,'' said Ann Palmer, Acura Division, American Honda Motor Company, Inc. ``The MDX is a strategic fit for this kind of content, with its emphasis on the outdoor lifestyle and its continuing appeal to golf enthusiasts.''
``The collaboration of these three companies represents an ideal match of strategy and creativity in brand-building,'' said Ron Spohn, Associate Creative Director, Genex. ``Acura's sponsorship of the AvantGo golf channel is an excellent branding tool -- golf enthusiasts can `beam' the game to their friends, spreading the promotion, building site traffic for Acura.com and increasing visibility with the MDX audience.''
``Mobile advertising is new medium for Acura to build brand awareness among the more than 4.5 million registered users of the AvantGo mobile Internet service,'' said Mike Aufricht, chief marketing officer, AvantGo. ``By presenting the Acura brand in this unique, entertaining way, Acura and Genex are pushing the mobile advertising envelope, making the information relevant and useful for the individuals who have integrated devices into their daily activities.''
