Shahed From Garrett Installed as 2002 President Of Society of Automotive Engineers International
DETROIT, March 8 -- Dr. Syed M. Shahed, Vice President, Advanced Products & Systems of Garrett Engine Boosting Systems (a business unit of Honeywell), was duly sworn in as the 2002 President of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) in an official ceremony today.
Dr. Shahed accepted the President's gavel from outgoing 2001 President Neil A. Schilke at the conclusion of the SAE Board of Director's meeting in Detroit, Michigan. The Board meeting came at the conclusion of SAE's successful 2002 World Congress, the world's largest automotive technology conference and exhibition.
Shahed was selected by the Society's 66-member Annual Nominating Committee in balloting conducted during the 2001 World Congress meeting last March. He takes over the highest post of the nearly 84,000 member organization, a technical society that provides the mobility engineering community worldwide with technical information and professional development through its many publications, meetings, courses, and technical standards.
A graduate of Osmania University in Hyderabad, India, Dr. Shahed also holds an MA and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. An SAE Fellow and longstanding member, Shahed has been active in fuels and lubricants committees, the Future Transportation Technology (FTT) Conference, the Horning Board of Awards, and several Coordinating Research Council (CRC) committees. He served as general chair of FTT in 1998 and chair of the Horning Board of Awards in 1990. Shahed has twice been awarded the Forest R. McFarland Award for sustained contributions to SAE.
In his current position for Garrett, Shahed's responsibilities include the development of advanced smart boosting systems for improving diesel and gasoline engine performance, fuel economy, and emissions control. He has a broad mix of academic and industry experience, having worked for Cummins Engine Company and Southwest Research Institute and held faculty positions at the University of California, Berkeley, and University of Texas at San Antonio.
Dr. Shahed and his wife, Asha, live in Torrance, California, and enjoy the company of their daughter, Joohi, who is training at Duke University to be a neurologist.
