SPDI Expands SPD-Smart Product Line; Orders for Products Now Being Shipped
INCHEON, Korea--March 8, 2002--SPD Inc. today announces new innovations in its product line and delivery process for SPD-Smart(TM) products for the glass, architectural and automotive industries.Window manufacturers and other commercial customers can now place orders for 30-day delivery of SPD-Smart laminated glass and SPD-Smart insulating glass units (IGUs).
These new products utilize Research Frontiers Incorporated's SPD light-control technology. The thin, flexible film regulates the amount of light passing through normally clear glass or plastic, allowing users to control light and glare instantly and precisely. SPD Inc.'s parent company is Hankuk Glass Industries (KSC:02000.KS), Korea's largest glass manufacturer and a licensee of Research Frontiers Incorporated.
SPD Inc. mass produces SPD film at its new factory in Incheon, Korea, which has a capacity to produce over 4 million square feet of SPD film per year. Products using this film allow users to control light, manage glare, save energy, improve safety and comfort, gain privacy and block damaging ultraviolet rays - either automatically or with the turn of a dial. SPD Inc. manufactures SPD-Smart laminated glass by bonding SPD film between two pieces of glass. In addition to light and glare control, SPD laminated glass reduces noise and is shatter-resistant, making it ideal for use in homes, buildings and automotive vehicles.
SPD Inc. is also launching a new SPD-Smart insulating glass unit. Insulating glass units (IGUs) have become the standard in residential windows worldwide. SPD-Smart IGUs consist of a pane of low-E glass, a spacer with sealants, and then a piece of SPD-Smart laminated glass. These IGUs offer all of the light-control and other benefits of SPD-Smart laminated glass noted above, as well as enhanced energy efficiency, blocking of harmful ultraviolet light, and additional security and sound-proofing benefits.
Authorized purchasers in the glass, architectural and automotive industries may now place orders for SPD-Smart laminated glass or SPD-Smart IGUs. Standard or custom sizes are available and are pre-fitted with an electrical interface that permits architectural and automotive windows, appliance windows, skylights, interior partitions and sunroofs to be made SPD-Smart.
"While working with our existing and potential customers, we learned that in order to make it easier for our customers, and to maximize market penetration quickly, we should expand our product offering to include SPD-Smart products already fabricated for installation," noted Byoung Chan (BC) Lee, Representative Director of SPD Inc.
Companies interested in becoming an authorized purchaser and ordering SPD-Smart laminated glass or IGUs in Asia may contact SPD Inc. or may visit their booth at the GLASSTECH ASIA 2002 Exhibition in Singapore (March 6-8, 2002). Customers in the United States or Europe should contact Research Frontiers or visit their booth No. 1307 at the National Glass Association (NGA) Show in Houston, Texas (March 20-22, 2002).
