Harman International Announces New Harman Mercedes-Benz Award

    WASHINGTON--March 7, 2002--Harman International Industries, Inc. today identified Mercedes-Benz as the source of a significant new award for the design and manufacture of an innovative, fully integrated digital infotainment/telematics system for the Mercedes-Benz S Class range.
    Based on Harman's optical bus, "MOST", this new system provides multi-media, DVD based navigation, Internet access, radio and music reproduction, hands free telephone and voice activation. The audio will be Harman's proprietary new seven channel Logic 7 system.
    Dr. Sidney Harman, Executive Chairman of the Board, Harman International, said, "This major new award represents over $200 million in annual incremental sales. This remarkable system will establish a new benchmark in infotainment/telematics including innovative bit stream processing and storage technologies. First shipments for the all new Mercedes S Class are scheduled for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005. With this award, Harman becomes the worldwide integrated systems provider for the full range of Mercedes-Benz platforms."
    In a conference call with the financial community on January 30, 2002, the company had revealed the award. It was not free at the time to identify the source of the award.
