Durr Group Companies Supply Paint Finishing Systems in the US; Schenck Pegasus Supplies R&D Equipment for the Development of VRSCA V-Rod
DETROIT--March 6, 2002--SAE 2002, Schenck Pegasus Booth #2011. Setting the scene at the Schenck Pegasus booth this year will be the new VRSCA V-Rod(TM) from Harley-Davidson -- the latest in a new line of performance custom motorcycles.Schenck Pegasus Corporation, a company of the Durr Group has supplied a number of engine dynamometers and emission chassis dynamometers to Harley Davidson's North American research and development facilities. A number of these systems were utilized for the development of the new V-Rod. The 1130cc 60 degree V-Twin engine delivers a dramatic increase in horsepower while setting new benchmarks in terms of durability through Harley-Davidson's extensive emissions and development testing regimen.
In addition, The Durr Technology Group recently received a major contract worth $90 million through its US operation Durr Industries Inc., to design and build two new paint shops at Harley-Davidson's facilities in Tomahawk, Wisconsin and York, Pennsylvania. Harley-Davidson is making these capital investments to increase production rates in view of growing demand, and in order to protect its long term competitive edge.
In Tomahawk, Durr is supplying a flexible paint finishing system including environmental equipment for the application of solvent-free powder and wet paint. Starting May 2002, Harley-Davidson will be painting plastic and SMC parts for their entire model range.
In York, Durr was not only put in charge of supplying a complete paint finishing system, but also of designing and building the entire 350,000 square foot facility. The supply included the factory build, logistics concept and administrative infrastructure. This was part of a major project planned by Harley-Davidson.
According to the time schedule, Harley-Davidson's Softail series will be manufactured, painted and assembled in the new facility towards the end of 2003. For the paint shop, Durr will be supplying a systems solution for the entire process chain, including pretreatment, powder and wet paint application equipment plus conveyor and environmental systems. "The order shows that capital investments to increase cost effectiveness still have priority in the US also. New, more efficient production systems will significantly help our customers to reduce costs," says Hans Dieter Potsch, Chairman of the Board of Management of Durr AG.
The Durr Technology Group is one of the world's leading suppliers of production systems and manufacturing support services for the vehicle industry and its component suppliers.
