NSC Offers Updated Flagger Training Program
Itasca, Ill. -- The National Safety Council (NSC) has updated its Flagger Training program to meet new standards. The program was created to reduce work zone injuries and deaths, and provide safe passage through and around work zones. The NSC program now meets the specifications in the new Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and ANSI ISEA Standard 107-1999 (American National Standards Institute - International Safety Equipment Association).

*Roadway construction is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country,* said National Safety Council President Alan C. McMillan. *However, when all workers perform their jobs using the same high safety standards, incidents and associated costs are reduced.*

In 2000, there were 1,093 people killed in work zone crashes. Compared to 1999, work zone fatalities and injuries increased 26 percent. Over 40,000 people annually are injured in work zone incidents. Lost work time, higher insurance premiums and workers* compensation claims are at an all time high.

Participants in the upgraded Instructor course receive a laser-printer friendly Certificate of Completion; an Instructor Manual that meets the new specifications in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and ANSI ISEA-107-1999; audio-visuals in two available formats - overhead transparencies or PowerPoint on CD-ROM; a Participant Guide (workbook), revised to follow the Instructor Manual in a new format and size, laminated and easier to use (fits into a pocket); and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD, Parts 1, 5, & 6). This book will now become a part of the Instructor Manual. Individual copies will be available for purchase.
