Celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2002, the band that eventually became the
best-known and best-loved Celtic ensemble in the world was founded in 1962 by
piper Paddy Moloney. The players-who all knew each other already from the Dublin
music scene-came together for a single record for the Claddaugh label. The idea
of doing an all-instrumental recording was unusual at that time; vocal albums
were much more common.
The Chieftains’ international fame grew rapidly, and their virtuosity enabled
the group to bring the traditional sounds of Ireland to an astonishingly wide
audience. In 1983, they were invited to China. They were one of the first
Western groups to perform there, and the first to play on the Great Wall. They
became well known in the United States as well. They played on NBC’s The Today
Show and Saturday Night Live, among other television appearances. Also in 1983,
they were the first group ever invited to play in the rotunda of the U.S.
Capitol Building at the invitation of the Speaker of the House, Tip O’Neill, and
Massachusetts senator Edward M. Kennedy.
They celebrated the 25th anniversary of the group in 1988; the following year,
the Irish government bestowed The Chieftains with the title "Musical Ambassador"
for their contributions to Irish culture. In 1994, the group traveled to Nara,
Japan’s Todajiji Temple for an event called The Great Music Experience,
broadcast live via satellite worldwide. The concert featured The Chieftains in
both solo performance and in collaborations with such artists as Joni Mitchell,
Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, Michael Kamen, the Tokyo Philharmonic, and 150 chanting
Buddhist monks. The Chieftains tour frequently, particularly in the United
States. Each St. Patrick’s Day, they perform in New York to a sold-out audience.
They were the first group to perform traditional Irish shows at New York’s
Madison Square Garden in December 1988. In 1984, they made their debut
appearance with an American orchestra in a concert with the Milwaukee Symphony.
Since that time, they have performed with many leading American ensembles,
including a television special with John Williams and the Boston Pops.
