Hiskey, Pobst Finish on Podium Despite Setbacks
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (March 2, 2002) - After a wreck in Thursday afternoon's practice, Kim Hiskey and Randy Pobst weren't sure they would even start the Nextel 250, let alone finish on the podium.
The ZIP Racing crew worked hard to get the #35 ZIP/WeatherTech/Alliance Residential Management Porsche GT3-R and Hiskey and Pobst co-piloted the machine to a third-place GT finish at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
"This was race was definitely a credit to the team," Hiskey said. "They worked extremely hard and quickly to get the car ready for the race. Without their hard work, we wouldn't have even been able to compete this weekend."
Pobst started the race and ran the car in the first GT position for most of the time, a lap up on his GT competitors. During a pit stop on Lap 90, the team had problems with the fueling and Pobst and Hiskey were having trouble with the belts during the driver change. The long pit stop caused the #35 team to lose two positions.
Hiskey took over the Porsche and kept with the team's pace to hold off the rest of the GT field to finish third.
"I just went out there and kept the pace we had going," Hiskey said. "I was having some problems with the tires, but they held up through the end of the race."
Beginning with the California Speedway event, Hiskey and Pobst will contest the remainder of the Rolex season in Hiskey's #15 Crazy Redhead Racing/Fordahl Motorsports Porsche GT3-RS sponsored by WeatherTech and Helly Hanson. Hiskey is the sole woman driver and car owner in the Grand American series.
