DORRICOTT RACING BEGINS 2002 TOYOTA ATLANTIC CAMPAIGN
THIS WEEKEND IN MONTERREY, MEXICO
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (March 4, 2002) - Two new faces will wear the
Dorricott moniker alongside another rising star from Dorricott Racing when
the 12-race 2002 Toyota Atlantic Championship makes its debut at the
Tecate/Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix
The 32 lap/67.2 mile opening round of the 2002 Toyota Atlantic
Championship will be around the challenging 2.104-mile, 12-turn street
circuit in Monterrey's Fundidora Park, and is scheduled to begin at 3:00
p.m. (CT), Saturday, March 9. It is the featured support race to the CART
FedEx Championship Series Tecate Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix, presented by
Herdez, the following day.
Second year Dorricott driver Jon Fogarty, of Portola Valley,
Calif., is looking to make a quick impact in his rookie season of Atlantic
competition. What he lacks in "Atlantic" experience may be off-set by the
fact that he is one of only a handful of drivers who have ever raced in a
support event at Fundidora Park.
Fogarty gave the Fundidora Park podium a distinct "Dorricott
Racing" feel when he finished third place in the Fogarty Winery & Vineyards
Lola in last year's Dayton Indy Lights Championship. Dorricott Racing ended
up being "the toast of the track" as former Dorricott driver Townsend Bell,
of San Luis Obispo, Calif., won the race. Bell is driving the #20
Visteon/Patrick Racing Toyota Reynard in the CART FedEx Championship this
season.
Following Monterrey, Fogarty earned the outside pole in round two
at Long Beach. He developed into a consistent front-runner during the next
couple of races before being sidelined with a herniated cervical disk.
Fogarty missed six races including five mid-season events at
Portland, Kansas, Toronto, Mid-Ohio, and St. Louis. He returned for round
10 at Road Atlanta and promptly qualified on the outside pole. The
following week he qualified and finished a career-best second place at
Laguna Seca in round 11. Fogarty, however, decided to "error on the side of
medical caution" at the season finale at California Speedway and withdrew.
He finished 11th place in Indy Lights with 48 points.
New to Dorricott Racing in 2002 is veteran Indy Lights and Atlantic
rookie Luis Diaz, of Mexico City, and veteran Atlantic driver Alex Gurney,
of Newport Beach, Calif.
Diaz, who will drive the No. 33 Telmex Swift .014a, scored 88
points and finished seventh place in the 2001 Dayton Indy Lights
Championship with Roquin Motorsports. A veteran of 24 Indy Lights races,
Diaz scored an Indy Lights career best third place finish and set the
fastest lap at Laguna Seca. Diaz joins Fogarty as one of the few drivers in
this weekend's Toyota Atlantic event that have raced at Monterrey. Diaz
qualified and finished 11th place last year at Monterrey.
Diaz proved his front-runner capabilities in 2001 behind fourth
place finishes at Texas Motor Speedway and Milwaukee. He also placed fifth
at Toronto for his fourth top-five showing. Late race wet weather at
Portland and Road Atlanta contributed to spins in races that otherwise
would have seen Diaz reach the podium. Other highlights last year included
career-best qualifying of fourth at Portland and Laguna Seca.
Gurney is a veteran of multiple internationally recognized
open-wheel formula racing series' including one season in the Barber Dodge
Pro Series, two years in the Toyota Atlantic Championship, and one season
of British Formula 3.
Gurney's Toyota Atlantic experience dates back to his rookie season
in 1999 where he scored a season-best fifth-place at Montreal. His best
qualifying result of fourth came at Houston while driving for P1
Racing/Team KOOL Green. An overall Atlantic finish of 12th place hid the
fact that he scored points in each of the seven races he completed.
Gurney's sophomore season in Atlantic was with the All-American
Racers first-year Atlantic program where he finished eight place in the
Atlantic Championship. Gurney cemented his reputation as a front-runner by
winning the pole at Cleveland, qualifying in the top-five in eight of 12
races, and scoring seven top-10 finishes.
Gurney ran in the British Formula 3 Championship in 2001 where he
was regularly "in the points" and scored eight top-10 finishes despite
being encumbered by a new Renault engine still in development. He was among
eight drivers invited by Dorricott Racing to test at Buttonwillow Raceway
Park outside of Bakersfield, Calif., for potential driver openings in 2002.
Gurney opened many eyes when he not only ran the fastest time of any
invitee, but also ran some of the fastest recorded lap times of any driver
Dorricott Racing had ever tested at Buttonwillow.
Speed Channel will provide a same-day delayed telecast of the
Monterrey Toyota Atlantic Championship race from 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. ET
(6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. PT), Saturday, March 9.
Dorricott Racing is a year-round professional motorsports
organization with its race shop located in Bakersfield, Calif. Detailed
