Toyota Reports Strong February Sales - Lexus Division Posts Best-Ever February
TORRANCE, Calif., March 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported strong February sales of 126,092, an increase of 1.7 percent over the same period last year.
``The industry is emerging from the volatility of the last few months and is settling into a more normal sales pattern,'' said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. ``With the mild downturn comes a mild recovery, which should translate to solid industry sales for the balance of the year.''
The Toyota Division posted steady February sales of 109,457, up 0.6 percent. The Lexus Division enjoyed best-ever February sales of 16,635 vehicles, an increase of 9.4 percent over the same period last year. The record-breaking month enabled Lexus to maintain its position as the top-selling luxury brand in the nation.
Toyota passenger car sales totaled 72,566, up 4.8 percent over last February. The all-new 2002 Camry led the way with best-ever February sales of 35,993, up 25.7 percent. The Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan also posted best-ever February sales with 1,481 units sold, an increase of 23.6 percent.
Toyota light truck sales were led by the Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV), with best-ever February sales of 7,690, an increase of 51.7 percent. The Sequoia full-size SUV posted best-ever February sales of 5,171, up 3.4 percent.
The Lexus Division's record-breaking February was paced by best-ever February passenger car sales of 10,773, up 21.9 percent. The all-new ES 300 luxury sedan recorded best-ever February sales with 5,195 units sold, an increase of 98.2 percent. The SC 430 hardtop convertible continued to post steady sales with 1,231 units delivered.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 57.7 percent of total
February sales.
