Short Track Preview Event Cancelled for March 9th
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (March 1, 2002) - In an effort to be "good neighbors,"
Hardeeville Motor Speedway officials have cancelled the Short Track Preview
/ Media Day originally scheduled for Saturday, March 9th in order to avoid
a conflict with a church outing presented by The Mount Olive Reformed
Methodist Union Episcopal Church. Residents from the Toomerville community
notified speedway officials about the outing last week.
During the off-season, the HMS officials have taken many steps to respond
to the sound and light concerns of the residents of Toomerville.
Noise-reduction mufflers are now mandatory on all local divisions of
racecars that include the Late Models, Legends Cars, Street Stocks, Mini
Stocks and Xtreme Stock Cars. Severe penalties will be in place for
drivers attempting to compete without the use of a muffler. There has been
extensive testing done with various mufflers from many manufacturers within
the automobile racing industry. Officials have been pleased with the test
results, however they will continue to research and test any new
noise-reduction products within the industry.
The public address speakers on the north side of the speedway have also
been redirected during the winter months. The billboards and wall barriers
have been moved closer to the track in order to help contain the noise
within the speedway. Gaps between the billboards have been filled in as
well. The berm outside of turns three and four of the speedway has been
lengthened and heightened with numerous loads of dirt.
Shades have been placed over the Musco lights on the north side of the
track to reduce the glare seen by the neighbors in Toomerville. There
self-imposed "lights out" curfew to be enforced throughout the 2002 racing
season.
The number of racing events on Saturday nights has been reduced to 29
events, down from 32 events in 2001. The events on Thursday/Friday nights
have been reduced from 28 events in 2001 to 17 events in 2002. Residents
within a one-mile radius of the speedway are being offered complimentary
season passes for all racing events in 2002 season. Anyone living within
the one-mile radius should contact the speedway offices.
Speedway officials are also developing fund raising opportunities for the
Mount Olive Reformed Methodist Union Episcopal Church members to sell
tickets for racing events at the speedways. Proceeds from the ticket sales
will go to the church.
Many race drivers and crews have invested a tremendous amount of time and
money to prepare for the upcoming 2002 race season that officially begins
on Saturday, March 16th with the Gator 104.9FM St. Patrick's Day
Spectacular featuring the Allison Legacy Cars, Legends Cars, Street Stocks,
Mini Stocks and Xtreme Stock Cars. Qualifying heats for all local
divisions, originally scheduled for March 9th, are rescheduled for Friday
night, March 15th. The Allison Legacy Cars will also be on hand Friday
night for practice.
The Hardeeville Motor Speedway is located is located three miles southeast
of I-95 on Highway 17 or ten miles north of Savannah on Highway 17.
