PR1 MOTORSPORTS ANNOUNCES DRIVER LINE UP
FRESNO, CALIF. (March 1, 2002) - PR1 Motorsports today announced their
driver line up for the 2002 race season.
Lawson Aschenbach, Travis Irving, and Sean McIntosh will all contest the
Zetec Championship in 2002.
Aschenbach, of Gaithersburg, Md., competed on the national level last year
in the SCCA Formula Ford division, where he found great success. Aschenbach
is new to the PR1 team this year and team owner Bobby Oergel is looking
forward to working with him.
Irving, of Chino Hills, Calif., returns for his second year with the team in
2002. Irving, has moved up the ranks racing Formula Ford and a select number
of Zetec Championship races last year. In his professional debut, Irving
finished an impressive third place on the challenging Mid-Ohio Sports Car
Course. Irving will be looking build on that success this year.
McIntosh, of Coquitlam, B.C., Can. will race the entire Zetec Championship
in 2002, after running a limited summer schedule last year. The
sixteen-year-old has shown great progress in off-season testing and is very
excited about the upcoming season.
"To win the Zetec Championship will take a lot of hard work and commitment,"
said McIntosh. "I believe our team has what it takes."
"Having worked with Sean and Travis for two years, and racing against Lawson
last year I know these drivers have tremendous talent, " said Oergel. "They
all will be competing for rookie of the year honors, and we believe that
they will also be strong contenders for the championship this season. We are
definitely looking forward to the first race of the season."
PR1 Motorsports was built on the premise that drivers need to have a place
to go after karting. Many drivers today try to make the jump from karting
straight to the Zetec Championship without success. Oergel believes that the
Formula Ford 1600 class is a great place to learn before jumping to the
2.0-liter Zetec level. With that premise in mind, PR1 also has a Formula
Ford 1600 team and a driver-testing and development program.
Seventeen-year-old Charlie Kimball, of Camarillo, Calif., will compete on a
national level in the Formula Ford division this year with hopes of moving
up the ladder in 2003. Kimball, who is a multi-time national champion in
karting, came to the team's testing program in 2002. Now filling Kimball's
spot in the testing program will be thirteen-year-old Joel Miller. Miller of
Hesperia, Calif., who has found much success in karting, will continue to
race karts on a full time basis along side the formula ford testing program.
